There is nothing locals can talk more about than weather. And we are expecting some dirt from Tropical Storm Noel and hurricane force winds.
The last hurricane to hit this area was a few years back when Juan brought relatively unexpected havoc to the region. This time, there is warning. Weather centres are precautioning that the pre-storm conditions are similar to Juan’s. They are advising people to prepare for possible electric outages, etc.
Locals are stocking up with supplies — there is hardly a flashlight or water jug to be found in any of the stores I visited today — but there is the same chatty “the more they make of it the less it will turn out to be” attitude most commonly observed for snow storms. The caution is palitable though… supplies are bought, outdoor furniture stowed away, and people are adjusting weekend plans for more homebound activitites.
Personally, I have spent more today than I normally would. I have no idea why I felt compelled to purchase extra treats when Halloween has just passed, but it seemed a proper occasion for it. Between that and the radio, batteries, and candles we needed I probably went a tad overboard, but most are supplies which we will need for winter storms as well. We’ll need new treats, of course, but the rest of the stuff should last.
Interestingly, I also had the foresight to purchase a deck of cards. Decent entertainment, I thought, for when there is no electricity to run the devices we normally turn to for amusement. Turns out I don’t actually know how to play any card games though. No Crazy Eights. No Go Fish. No poker. Nothing. How’s that for planning?
Tommorrow (weather permitting) I’ll give you the answer to the illegal treat 🙂
